Coach honored for Sporting a Winning Attitude

Congratulations to Glenbard West boys volleyball coach Christine Giunta-Mayer
for earning a Sporting a Winning Attitude award from the Illinois High School Association for exceptional sportsmanship. Giunta-Mayer hosted a boys volleyball game against St. Francis with a theme of "Feed the Need."  They filled the bleachers with shopping bags full of food for the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry and raised a sizable cash donation.  The IHSA commended the charity event and the great sportsmanship between the teams, stating the thing that really stood out was the fact the opposing teams were cheering for each other and congratulating each other for good plays.

GO FRESHMEN!  ANOTHER 1st PLACE TOURNAMENT TROPHY!
It was literally a rainy day on Saturday for many sports.  Fields were closed and the rain came pouring down, but not in the St. Patrick's Gym. Once again Topper Volleyball set the bard high by defeating for the first time St. Francis, Wheaton in the Championship game.  Glenbard West
was awaiting a re-match after falling to the talented Spartans at the Spartan Invitational early on this season.  With a group that has come together and proven that teamwork is a necessity for completing team goals, West comes home the champions once again.  There road to
the final match was challenging knocking off OPRF, Niles North, Riverside Brookfield, and St. Patricks. WAY TO GO TOPPERS!!  You have set the bar high for everyone and we thank you for your efforts and willingness to work together and achieve.

FRESHMEN BOYS VOLLEYBALL - CHAMPIONS
FIRST PLACE AT GLENBARD EAST SPRINGFEST
A beautiful Saturday it was as the freshmen boys volleyball team took first place at the local Glenbard East Springfest Tournament.  In pool play the boys defeated St. Charles North, Plainfield Central, and the host school Glenbard East.  Setter Alex Emanuel lead the team by running a smooth and relaxed floor while Ian Lawson put up the huge block and Sam Nevins and Alex Kahn put the ball away from the outside.  Excellent defense by Danny Schlesser, Mikey O'Dea, and libero Kevin Loftus allowed for the Hilltoppers to gain advantage after advantage on the floor.  Going into the championship game against Stevenson, the Toppers new they had to did deep and that they did.  Great middle attacking by Scottie Thomas, Joey Zaccaria, and serving by Brendan Loftus, the Hilltoppers put a CHAMPIONSHIP in their books.  GO TOPPERS!

ANOTHER SWEEP - THIS TIME IN THE GOLD
There is no reason to make things easy when you play this game.  That is why Glenbard West has put the entire West Suburban Gold Division on their schedule.  Traveling to first in conference Leyden was a bus ride worth taking.  From Freshmen to Varsity, Glenbard West managed to sweep Leyden off their feet with all level victories.  Whether it was all of the french fries at Jonnies Beef the day before, or a long bus ride with 44 student-athletes, once again the TOPPERS ARE ON THE BOARD.  Watch GW take on Whitney Young in Biester on Thurs. April 23rd Frosh/JV @ 5 and Varsity @ 6.  Hope to see you then. Varsity - get ready for speed scrabble!
